My Review

After being forced to wear lederhosen for the annual holiday card picture, twelve-year-old Chris thinks that the least his parents can do is get him the Tony Hawk skateboard he wants for Christmas. But when he recovers the hand-carved Baby Jesus that everyone thought had been destroyed in a fire the year his Grandma died, Chris realizes that some gifts are even more important than skateboards.

It's easy to forget that for some, the Christmas season is not a jolly time but perhaps a sad one.  This was the case for twelve year old Chris.  He had fond memories of his late grandmother, especially during this time of the year.  His grandmother always had a special gift under the Christmas tree each year for him and this was to be the third year that such a special tradition would not occur.  So Chris figured he deserved the second best, a Tony Hawk skateboard. Then comes Hyrum who would be grateful to receive a coat that would fit him.  This jumpstarts the softening of Chris's heart.  Moreover, after discovering that his grandmother indeed left a special gift under the tree for him, Chris hearkened to her written words and found the true spirit of Christmas and his heart was full.

Perhaps the first thought in a child's mind about Christmas is receiving presents.  This short book would be a wonderful family Christmas reading to help demonstrate that Christmas is about baby Jesus and giving.  A sweet story of change of heart, from a selfish one to an altruistic one.  With the hussle and bussle of this holiday, we can use a reminder of why we give presents. Chris's story would do that.
