Banned Books Week Hop

Welcome to my stop in this giveaway hop. I echo my statement from last year's Banned Books Week:  "This topic is a touchy one for me. I can understand the out cry of some people to censor a book in the name of indecency, so I'm not especially sure I wouldn't vote to challenge a book given the right situation. I certainly would voice my concerns if highly sexual or violent books fall in the hands of my three young kids under school supervision for example. But generally to politcally ban a book would not be my solution to the indifference. As I understand it, books are not rated as in movies but categorized by age appropriateness. So it would make sense for a parent to screen for books that are appropriate for their children's age and moral values. Those that doesn't meet the criterias will just not make it in their children's hands or book shelves ..that's what I do."

Freebie Alert: Sweet Venom by Tera Lynn Childs

Here's one for YA fans!  It's FREE!!
Get it HERE ..Kindle ebook edition.

Grace just moved to San Francisco and is excited to start over at a new school. The change is full of fresh possibilities, but it’s also a tiny bit scary. It gets scarier when a minotaur walks in the door. And even more shocking when a girl who looks just like her shows up to fight the monster.

Gretchen is tired of monsters pulling her out into the wee hours, especially on a school night, but what can she do? Sending the minotaur back to his bleak home is just another notch on her combat belt. She never expected to run into this girl who could be her double, though.

Greer has her life pretty well put together, thank you very much. But that all tilts sideways when two girls who look eerily like her appear on her doorstep and claim they’re triplets, supernatural descendants of some hideous creature from Greek myth, destined to spend their lives hunting monsters.

These three teenage descendants of Medusa, the once-beautiful Gorgon maligned in myth, must reunite and embrace their fates in this unique paranormal world where monsters lurk in plain sight. (Amazon)

Sale Alert: The Reluctant Bachelorette by Rachael Anderson

Unknowingly cast as the bachelorette for her town’s charity event, Taycee Emerson wants out. Especially when she discovers her old teenage crush, Luke Carney, is one of the bachelors and it's up to the viewers--not her--to decide which bachelors stay or go.

Coerced into participating, Taycee does what any self-preserving girl would do. She launches a subtle attack on Luke’s good name with the hope of getting him voted off the show. Unfortunately, Luke's an eye-for-an-eye kind of guy, and when he discovers what she's up to, it means revenge.

But when their pranks go south, will they screw up any chance they have at a future together, or will they be able to forgive and forget and prove that love really does conquer all? (Amazon)

"Fairy Tale Fail"

by Mina V. Esguerra, AF, 2010, Kindle edition ebook, 112p, rating=2.5
Source: purchased

Of all the twenty-something women who are hopeless romantics, Ellie Manuel is more “hopeless” than “romantic.”
Even after her Prince Charming broke up with her, she just won’t give up … because fairy tale heroines don’t live “happily ever after” right away, silly, they’re tested first!
Determined to pass the test, she spends the next year restoring herself to the girl Prince Charming had fallen in love with in the first place.
Until she discovers that life without him might not be so bad after all: her career is taking off, her confidence is back, and the cute guy at work is no longer a stranger.
So when is it okay to quit on a fairy tale? (Goodreads)

This had been on my TBR/wishlist for awhile and I finally got to reading it.  I had enjoyed the author's other book, Love Your Frenemies, so I had high hopes for this one.  I was disappointed.  It was a cute romance story and well written but it just didn't pop for me.  As short as it was, I struggled to finish it.  I just didn't find it captivating.  I didn't care for the swearing either, even though it was very minimal.  I just found the book as a whole a bit humdrum and pretentious.

It was not an awful book.  I just was expecting it to be more interesting.

"Indecent Proposal"

by Jack Engelhard, AF, 2012, c1988, Kindle edition ebook, 310p, rating=2
Source: purchased
Content:  adult sex and foul language

Arab billionaire Ibrahim Hassan offers Joshua Cantor $1 million if he will allow Hassan to sleep with his beautiful blond wife, Joan. But this ostensibly "indecent proposal" has darker overtones for Cantor, whose parents survived the Holocaust. He's a corporate speech writer with an average salary and he's "tired of being poor." He's also afraid of losing his well-bred wife. Joan has never complained about their financial situation, but now Joshua's whining drives her to consider Hassan's offer. (Goodreads)

Wow, very different from the movie and wouldn't you know it, I like the movie version much better!  The only significant thing I saw that the movie stayed true to the book was the proposition (a very rich man to pay a million dollars to spend a night with another man's wife).  Everything else was different, from character names to the journey to the ending.

A very moral seeking situation this proposition invites and so goes the fascination for the read.  I didn't care for the book's process though.  Maybe too political and racy for my taste.  I'm more for the fluff and personal meaning to the adventure.  Hence, I did like the overall conclusion of the struggle to finding relationship resolve.  There's quite a lot to muddle through when a marriage is strained with such a heavy ethical offer. The potential for irreversible damage is highly likely. Consequently, that was the true gamble that Joshua and Joan was taking.  Did their marriage survive in the end?  I won't spoil it for you just in case you want to read it.

International Book Week?

I saw a friend of mine on Facebook post this challenge (the statement below) on her status and was curious if it was true.  So I Googled for it's validity and really didn't find one that confirms that it is truly International Book Week but I thought it'd be fun to play along anyway.

I think it's too hard to guess such randomness so I'm going to say who the author is.

I'd love to hear your guess.  Also, I invite you to play along so leave me your book quote in the comments (including author) or if you make your own post in your blog, please leave me a link and I'll stop by and visit.

Okay, here's the challenge:

It's international book week. The rules: Grab the closest book to you, turn to page 52, post the 5th sentence. Don't mention the title.

The Classics Club: Introductions

(Join HERE)

Your online name: Jinky

Your blog name: Jinky is Reading

How many books you hope to read for the club: 50

When you joined: 3/21/12

Describe your literary background: Yikes, does classics in movies count?  No?  That's partly why I joined! :)

Why you joined The Classics Club and/OR one interesting fact about you: I want to make sure to include culture in my readings!  ..One interesting fact about me: My dad said I was named after Jerry Lewis's daughter-in-law.  His son, Gary married a Filipina name Jinky and my dad liked the name so there. :)

The favorite book you’ve read so far for the club (if you’ve begun your list.) Or, the one you’re most intrigued to read: Yikes, I've only read two:  Breakfast at Tiffany's and To Kill A Mockingbird.  Definitely like the latter much better (review still to come)!

Link ONE POST from your blog that you believe speaks to who you are: Wow, that's a hard one.  There's a piece of me in every post.  Off the top of my head I'd go with my review of a book that I hold dear to my heart, Standing for Something.  But just in case you want to learn more about me you may check out my review of Ilustrado or the meme, Know Me Better.

•Answer the one question you wish everybody would answer who enters this thread.  Hmm, my question, "Do you have a specific plan on how you will accomplish this challenge?":  Not exactly.  I figure 10 books a year ..one book a month with a couple of months off.   But looks like I'm way behind schedule so I'm looking forward to your answers and get some tips.  *wink-wink*
