Author-Book Profile with Excerpt: Lolly by Jeff Stewart

Please welcome Jeff Stewart, here with us today to introduce us to his latest book, Lolly: From Fishing to Fashion, Reeling in and Unlikely Fashion Success. This book "takes an in-depth and personal look at the start, deconstruction and re-birth of Los Angeles based clothing company, LOLLY Clothing".  I'm looking forward to reading this.  Perhaps the insights might spark and empower me to let out the entrepreneur in me that's eager to come out so I can make lots of money and buy more books!  That and to better the world with my contribution, of course! ;)

Jeff Stewart left home at seventeen, and lived between the states and cities. The lack of interest in the status quo or a stuffy corporate career left the road open, not for adventure or self-discovery, but for the motion of it. “I was happy moving and writing, working city to city and staying in a month-to-month rental, in a room that wouldn’t keep me, in a place I didn’t have to commit to.”
Stewart traveled almost two decades working odd jobs, food service, and once on an Alaskan salmon boat; anything to get the rent, to keep moving and writing. By the time he was in his mid-twenties, Stewart had written volumes of short stories, poems and two novels. At 29, He wrote his thinly fictionalized autobiography, March of Time and Skin.
At 30, Stewart was discovered by an international lifestyle magazine, that paid him for his work about life across the States. He traveled and wrote freelance for the magazine between 2001 and 2006. His articles, written in his unique, raw form, changed the face of the industry’s journalism and gained Stewart a readership spanning 27 countries.
In 2008, Stewart was highly established in the world of American Literature with the release of March of Time and Skin, a brutal and beautiful breathtaking beat of truthful humor and the war-like victories of a life in constant motion.
Stewart’s Dead Birds Hot is a dystopian vortex of short stories with titles like “January” –a mirrored collage of an oppressed bartender as his dramatic girlfriend and job break down the remaining echoes of a future, “Glory” – a look at a young deviant’s sex addiction through the eyes of San Francisco’s Chinatown, “Wreckedge” – a story about a writer on the Philadelphia leg of his book tour who encounters an impaired reader with a bizarre obsession, “Retribution” –a sideways stroll through Manhattan with Sonny, a man at war with illusions he didn’t create and cannot escape, and, “Dead Birds Hot” –the story of a man who meets a hot and hard summer involving chain-gang labor, highways, dirt, sweat, and broken teeth in what is quickly being acclaimed as one of the best works of short fiction in contemporary literature today.
Currently living in California, Stewart has finished the novel Bad Jacket, about a writer falsely accused, incarcerated, and facing life in prison due to a psychotic reader. Also completed is Lolly, a much-awaited novel featuring the life and rise of a fashion company told from the eyes of a writer’s dissent into a world of business and the shine of a small company’s struggle and unheard of success. Stewart also recently completed Flotsam for Jetsam, about a man who delivers food for the Irish mafia, gets married then escapes massacre only to fall into a life of fame and strangeness. Stewart’s next release is Gutted Rose & Other Stories, being released early next year.

Lolly: From Fishing to Fashion, Reeling in and Unlikely Fashion Success
Non-Fiction, 187p, 4.8 out of 5 stars so far on Amazon

The gulls glide on the wind and land on the famous rock planted in the tides while the ocean reaches for Asia. In a pub one mile inland and north, a writer’s chance meeting with the owners of a clothing company ignites an agreement─planting the seed for a novel about the blood, work, fate, and unyielding vision that confounded the fashion industry and left it examining the path of Lolly.

March of Time and Skin author Jeff Stewart navigates us through the start, deconstruction, and rebirth of Lolly Clothing, the salvation from the bottom of survival to the methods of their success. Told in a beautifully raw, stripped-down style, Lolly: From Fishing to Fashion, Reeling in an Unlikely Fashion Success takes us through the insides of the fashion company and their people with humor, heartbreak, and prose that introduce the fashion process through the world of the writer; moving us along from the effects of guts and consequences to the cathedral of Lolly, and the power of never listening to the odds.

Excerpt:
"There’s a storm in the Bering Sea. The boat is roughly 75 feet and the swells are tossing it around like a plastic ball. The boat crashes through the center of the storm, its eye beating down upon the deck, and the crew pulls together tokeep the haul secured and the nets and ropes from being absorbed by the ocean. The captain screams into the storm fromthe wheelhouse, the crew bites down on their cigarettes and clutch their rosary beads. The storm began as a light rainbefore sunset, and now its arms and breath are dealing blows into the boat without mercy. The sea rages beneath the roar, and they ride the storm out for hours and sit in the galley. A bottle of whiskey is produced and the shots get poured, cigarettes get lit, and the cards come out of the box for a hand of seven-card. The captain has nothing past the ante, but his mind is on the ocean, their slip of fate from the storm behind them, and talking to his men about investing in a high-end contemporary women’s fashion company…"

Review: Soc and Greasers: Behind The Scenes ... by Rob Lowe

Soc & Greasers: Behind The Scenes of The Outsiders from Rob Lowe's Stories I Only Tell My Friends by Rob Lowe, NF, 2012, Kindle book edition, 31p, Rating=3.5
Source: own; freebie

A scene taken straight from Rob Lowe’s New York Times bestselling memoir, Stories I Only Tell My Friends, a wryly funny and surprisingly moving account of an extraordinary life lived almost entirely in the public eye.

In Socs and Greasers, Lowe tells us what it was like to work on the set of The Outsiders, a film that helped launch the careers of many of today’s biggest stars, including Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Matt Dillon, Emilio Estevez, Ralph Macchio, C. Thomas Howell, and Rob Lowe himself.

There's something about being revealed something "behind the scenes" that grabs me. You know, as if I've been included in a secret and so it's exciting and I feel trusted. Well, Mr. Lowe doesn't know me from Adam so it's not that he trusts me but having read this book, I'm one more person that knows something outside the inner circle and that's exciting and intimate. That said, whoever was responsible for this "teaser" was astute. This disclosure was interesting enough to want me to know more, hence, to read the full memoir. Tricky, tricky, I say! I must admit though, the writing was pretty good. Note however that it does contain conversational adult language.

Review: Sia by Josh Grayson

Sia by Josh Grayson, YA, 2013, 3411, Rating=3
Publication Date: 11/20/2013
Source: ARC ebook copy provided by author in exchange for an honest review

When seventeen-year-old Sia wakes up on a park bench, she has no idea who or where she is. Yet after a week of being homeless, she’s reunited with her family. At school, she’s powerful and popular. At home, she’s wealthy beyond her dreams. But she quickly realizes her perfect life is a lie. Her family is falling apart and her friends are snobby, cruel and plastic. Worse yet, she discovers she was the cruelest one. Mortified by her past, she embarks on a journey of redemption and falls for Kyle, the “geek” she once tormented. Yet all the time she wonders if, when her memories return, she’ll become the bully she was before…and if she’ll lose Kyle.

I found myself turning the pages intrigued by the premise of fugue amnesia (DMS term would be Dissociative Fugue).  In this case, seventeen year old, Sia, finds herself waking up hungry and with memory loss.  Apparently not a good combination since she accepted the offer to get into a stranger's car.  Luckily she escaped his advances and befriended a homeless lady who ended up helping her survive the street life.  A week later Sia was reunited with her family and friends and finds out that she lived a luxurious lifestyle.  Plus, discover that she was queen teen of snob and the behind the curtain family troubles may have been the cause of the intense stress that put her over the edge.  This amnesia however had its perk ..it gave her morals.  And it seemed to put wonders in her life and those around her because by book's end things were squared away ..someone went to rehab, someone got the saving job, someone got the boy, etc.  May sound too neat and simplified but looking at the bigger picture, I applaud Sia's resolution to be an upstanding person and claim an identity.  In that sense, this story provided a heartwarming taste of the power of perspective ..."walk a mile in my shoes" kind of viewpoint.  Though I think this undertaking of amnesia may have been better suited for an adult novel because a mature character would be more plausible in such a case and supply a more enriching development.

Review: Stink and the Great Guniea Pig Express by Megan McDonald

Stink and the Great Guinea Pig Express by Megan McDonald (Stink #4), Illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds, YR, 2008, 120p, Rating=3.5
Source: school library

When three guinea pigs from the local pet shop make a great escape, Stink Moody and his friends Webster and Sophie spring into action.
TA-DA! The Fantastic Fur Friends round up the little hairballs and bring them safely back to Mrs. Birdwistle’s shop, where they discover — OH-LA-LA! — guinea pig pandemonium! Time for the Great Guinea Pig Giveaway! Stink and company hit the road in a crazy quest to find
good homes for 101 squealing, whistling, chirping, wiggly piggies.

My 7yo brought this home from school to read. Nabbed it for a quick read. Cute. I especially liked the "Stink's Furry Facts" at the end of each chapter. They were fun and interesting facts about guinea pigs ..like more than 10,000yrs ago South American Indians ate them and in the Andes mountains of Bolivia and Peru they still do! Moreover, the story itself was a wholesome tale of a traveling adventure to find homes for 101 guinea pigs that were saved from being put down.

My first Stink book and looks like Ms McDonald has weaved kid friendly characters that kids can relate to and parents would find acceptable ..at least this mama does.
