Review: Rosetta Rosetta Sit By Me! by Linda Walvoord

Rosetta, Rosetta, Sit By Me! by Linda Walvoord, YR, 2004, Hardcover, 96p, Rating=3.5
Source: library

"Rosetta, Rosetta, Sit by me!" That's what the white girls at Miss Tracy's Female Seminary yell when Rosetta, Frederick Douglass's nine-year-old daughter, shows up on the first day of school. But things don't turn out the way she expects.

This is a simple and heartwarming based on true story account of intolerance through the eyes of a nine year old. This book is short enough to keep the attention of a young reader and simplified for their understanding. I really like the title of this book. It fit perfectly with the positive message by story's end. Then if you're a history buff, the last quarter of the book is for you because it detailed, outlined, and sourced the true story of Frederick Douglass (aka Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey) and his family. Informative but for me, the read felt like reading the story all over again but in a more factual way ..so those pages are for skimming. ;)

Review: Does This Insecuirty Make Me Look Fat? by Michelle Wilson

Does This Insecurity Make Me Look Fat? by Michelle Wilson, NF -Self-help, 2013, Paperback, 176p, Rating=5
Source: provided by author through publisher in exchange for an honest review

• Why do clothing stores hang fun-house mirrors in their dressing rooms?
• The laundry doesn’t cry when it’s not folded, so why should I?
• Can I be confident even if an elevator calls me fat?

Michelle Wilson’s humorous yet poignant insights help women examine the limitations we place on ourselves out of insecurity and self-doubt. We have faith in God, but do we know that He has faith in us?
When we see ourselves with God’s eternal perspective, we can feel confident and whole—even in our imperfection. Just think what we might accomplish if we truly believe that we are more important than we know, stronger than we realize, and extraordinary in every way.

This book was for me.  I was already bawling by page ten!  I was in tears intermittently throughout the book because I'm going through some insecurities now and therefore could relate to the anxieties the author illustrated.  Plus, the scriptural references had me feeling loved and understood so the water works of comfort came easily.  I was reminded that life throws each of us a variety of Enemies of Perspective (false reality) but having the right Perspective (way God views things) to combat them makes for a winning day.  This book equipped me with the tools to remember God's eternal perspective (the bigger picture) and how to daily apply it to my life.

Ms. Wilson had chock-full of personal examples that provided great analogy to make a point.  After all, analogies are the modern day parables.  It's a fantastic way to grasp a concept being presented.  It's scary how some of them described me to the T!  It seems like I've found my spiritual twin.  But in seriousness, the big take out for me was that Heavenly Father is truly at my side championing for my success in my life.  That understanding inspires me to be confident and with a twist to the title, I can instead ask, "Does this confidence make me look magnificent?".

Geared to women but the principles can apply to any that may feel insecure.  I highly recommend this book to those wanting or needing to be uplifted. Ms. Wilson has a pulsing way of bringing to remembrance the power of God's love of hope and faith in each of us.  You will see yourselves in her words and then you will find peace in God's.

Thank you Ms. Wilson for this splendid book.  It is helping me.

Author-Book Profile with Excerpt: China Jewel by Thomas Hollyday

Please welcome Thomas Hollyday ...

“vision, voice, imagination”

Thomas Hollyday brings to life modern Chesapeake characters in his fictional shipbuilding town of River Sunday, a place located at a crossroads of the world. Reviewers praise his rich sense of place, animals and nature coupled with a vibrant imagination. His words resonate with a deep awareness of history and legend, reminiscent of Michener and Follett. From pre-history to the present, marauders have disturbed this land and its people as tribes, pirates, soldiers, criminals and, some say, even ghosts have come to do evil. These are the stories he relates. His novels have been compared to “pocket battleships,” with interwoven story lines, intriguing mysteries, beautiful love affairs and unique characters in carefully scripted pages. There is humor too as Tom draws on a comedic sense honed from an accomplished cartoonist background. Critics praise his ability to take the reader into thrilling suspense and to make him or her “see the blood” and “breathe the swamp air.” His books are enjoyable sojourns into a fascinating world and are definitely must reads on today’s bookshelf.

“Media around the world cover an inspiring and beautiful ocean race as international tall ships once again sail the ancient tea route to China. Yet, beneath the bright sails hide evil and treachery as the competitors sabotage and even murder each other to win the billion dollar prize.

“The American entry is the Peregrine - a replica of a famous Nineteenth Century clipper with a mysterious past. Tough former soldier Jim Cutter is the ship's race director. It's his responsibility to ensure the ship makes it to its destination in one piece.

“Then far at sea, the Peregrine disappears. Against impossible odds, Cutter must track down the ship and rescue its crew. Most importantly, he must still conquer his recurring personal demon. His only son is aboard. Cutter failed him once before - and he will go through Hell and High Water to bring him safely home again.”

EXCERPT:

Out in the harbor more sails were let go from yardarms and dropped to fill with wind. The crew adjusted the staysails and jibs to the early southeast breeze. The square cloth slapped and grew taut with the braces and sheet lines. As they provided thrust, the Peregrine, towering over the spectator boats, sailed ahead. The outward tide added speed. The ship’s wake became a white curl sliced upward by the curved sharp bow. The water raced along the black planks of the hull and out from the sides of the deep canted rudder.

She moved towards the Chesapeake, past the town’s famous rock pile rising like a tiny island in the harbor. The monument, constructed to honor the freed local slaves after the Civil War, would normally have been the center of attraction for tourists, but not today. All eyes were on this classic replica ship as it passed on its port and starboard sides the sleek late Twentieth Century ocean yachts. They were owned by observers from American, British, and French competitor teams, as well as many smaller weekend cruisers and sloops. Overhead, helicopters from Baltimore, photographing live video for the national and overseas news, droned like big searching bees looking over the strange white and black flower below.

In front of her a gray United States Navy guided missile frigate was moored. Her ensign flew at the center masthead; a Sikorsky Seahawk helicopter warmed up on her deck. The Assateague, a 110-footer from the Coast Guard, also stood by. To her starboard, on shore, hundreds of white, tan, and black families were standing in the backyards of their houses, silent as the ship heeled and gathered speed. Next to them, craftsmen were clustered on the wooden and steel railway of the shipyard or the tarpaper-covered roof of the long white woodworking shed. Seamstresses who created the antique Peregrine cotton sails stood on the town pier, their faces glowing. Here also the local high school band belted out the state song “Maryland My Maryland.” With them a white-haired choir from the Flying Tigers World War Two veterans club sang in harmony. All in all, the birth of this ship was treated as a resurrection by the townspeople; a rebirth of their heritage.

Morning shadows from the taller brick buildings spread over Cutter and the other spectators. When the band stopped, they heard the commands of the mates and the continuing cracks of sails filling with wind. The sailors climbed aloft, letting go more cloth and shifting the great controlling lines that adjusted the yardarms.

“Good party on the Peregrine deck last night,” said Jolly.

Cutter nodded. “The town newspaper editor said it’s the best Goddamned thing that has ever happened to this town.”

He paused, then said, “You got us all set?”

Jolly leaned over and whispered, “The navigation people estimate her to log two hundred twenty nautical miles a day.” The little man looked around suspiciously at the other revelers, many of them competitors, here to learn Peregrine race secrets.

“Keep at it,” Cutter said. “We need all the speed we can get.”

Review + $25 Giveaway: Sparks The Matchmaker by Russell Elkins

Sparks The Matchmaker by Russell Elkins, 2013, AF -clean romance, ebook, 244p, Rating=4
Source: provided by author through tour host in exchange for an honest review

Ollie just wants one thing. The girl.

Things haven’t been going so well with Anne lately, though; their relationship has become a perpetual study date, and Ollie’s roommates are starting to worry about him. How to fix things? Why, with a marriage proposal, of course.

Unfortunately for Ollie, his relationship with Anne has run out of gas. Life feels like it’s counting down to one. And that one is the only person in Ollie’s life he really cares about: Ollie. Perhaps, then, he should get over himself. But first he has to deal with Sparks, the irritating little Yankees fan who invades his life in order to “help” him. And while Keith, his best friend, is doing all he can to help, Ollie’s other friend Richie never fails to show up and threaten to ruin everything just by being himself. Never mind all the drama Sparks brings to the party by forcing Ollie to take a job actually helping people in need.

Will Ollie meet the girl? Will it be in history class? On a road trip to Colorado? Can he get over Anne, or should he try to mend the relationship? Should he pursue the new girl Sparks is trying to set him up with? As the strings of the puppeteer tangle with the strings of the heart, only one person can sort out the mess Ollie has made. It seems that the harder he tries, the more Ollie messes things up. Is Sparks a cruel manipulator, or is he really going to help Ollie find his match?

This was an easy and light read with a wholesome feel to it.  I imagine this plot fitting into one of an episode of "Touched by An Angel" ...only, Sparks wasn't an angel giving messages of hope from God as Monica did in the TV series ...or was he?  I suppose we'd learn more in the coming installments.  Anyway, I enjoyed the bunch of characters (especially the supporting characters).  I found a moderate amount of amusing banter.  The dialogue exchange sounded typical of guy talks one might see in a movie (do guys really talk like that in real life, not sure?!).  Also, the female characters brought a good share of suspense and drama to the mix.  Consequently, I was entertained.  I liked Ollie's coming of age road that he had directed himself to go.  Plus, I appreciated the heart factor that came to play, between strangers, friends, and love interests, that eventually brought to this book's good feel ending.  Therefore, I was sated.  So was I surprised to find out that this has a continuation.  That's fine with me!  I like reading books that share the message that you find yourself in the service of others.  I find them comforting and relaxing so it would be a treat to "hang out" with these characters again and see where life takes them from here.

Excerpt:

The professor began talking about Tiananmen Square. Ollie decided he couldn’t wait any longer. He put the back of his hand to his mouth and whispered out the side of it, “Tell me who.”

“What? I can't hear you.”

A little louder, “Who’s the girl?”

“Huh? Speak up.”

Ollie pretended he was clearing his throat. “AH-Who?!” People heard him that time, and some turned to give him looks. He flushed crimson.

“I was just kidding,” Sparks said. “I heard you the first time.”

“Jerk.” Ollie said it much too loudly. Half the class, including the professor, stopped to look at him. “Sorry,” he said. “Those Chinese army guys were jerks. You know,” he gestured to the slideshow image of the student confronting the tank in Tiananmen Square.

Class went on.

Sparks leaned in. “That's not going to help you catch the girl. She heard you loud and clear with that one.”

Ollie forgot about the history lesson and scanned the room again. She must be sitting somewhere close. He knew she would have to be attractive, or Sparks would never feel confident in what he was doing. In thirty seconds he narrowed his investigation down to two suspects.

He looked at Sparks and then pointed to a beautiful curly- haired brunette one row in front of him and 4 chairs to the right. He raised his eyebrows as if to ask, Is it her?

Sparks nodded, and Ollie felt a jolt of excitement run through him. He wasn’t sure whether or not Sparks would tell him who the girl was, even if he guessed right. He felt like something was going to happen in his favor for once. His future finally had a face. And it’s gorgeous! A smile spread itself luxuriantly across his face.

He spent the rest of his class time studying. But not history.

He carefully observed the way she chewed her bottom lip as she concentrated. He memorized every curl in her long brown hair. He took mental notes on every tiny detail.

Hearing other students start to rustle around, Ollie looked up at the clock and saw that the bell was soon to ring. Ollie didn't move. There was only one person in the class who was still listening to the lecture and she was the only other person who hadn't begun to pack up her books, waiting for the bell to ring. So he sat and studied her some more.

“You're going to need to stall a little,” Sparks said after the bell finally rang. “She's planning on sticking around after class to ask the professor something.”

“I'm going to meet her right now?” He was getting nervous.

Ollie waited just outside the classroom, trying to look nonchalant. He watched as students from other rooms and lecture halls began pouring into the hallway. He was tall enough to be able to monitor the many heads tightly packing in together as the stream of students gradually grew larger and larger, flowing toward the exits. From his vantage point he eventually saw a familiar curly brown head slip into the stream, so he bravely dove into the current that swept toward the doors where it opened up outside into an ocean of college students.

Ollie sat in his history class thinking about his future. His eyes darted from one pretty face to another, wondering which girl Sparks would be setting him up with. Sparks, who sat next to him, was smug. He had expected Sparks to have informed him by the time class started, but that didn’t happen. Of course. He’s maximizing his investment in my misery.
