Okay, now for my A to Z ...
This is a challenge to post every day in April (except on Sundays) blogging thematically from A to Z. Go HERE for details. My A-Z theme this year is Greek Mythology inspired by the book The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan that I recently read. Please be aware that what I write is my interpretation of my findings and may not necessarily be accurate.
Painting by J.W. Waterhouse
Adonis is known as the god of beauty and desire. Ovid wrote about Adonis in his book, Metamorphoses. In his interpretation, Aphrodite fell in love with Adonis and as a new born baby entrusted him to Persephone. It turned out that Persephone also fell in love with him and would not give him back to Aphrodite. So Zeus settled the dispute and told Adonis that he spends a third of every year with each goddess and the last third with whomever he wanted. He ended up choosing two-third each year with Aphrodite.
The painting above is a depiction of Adonis's dying moment. A wild boar had bitten his upper thigh (groin according to Bion's Lament for Adonis) that caused him to bleed to death. The woman over him is Aphrodite (the others are cupids) and the flowers are anemones ... now, I read a couple of versions of how the anemones came about. One, Aphrodite sprinkled nectar on Adonis's blood and it turned into anemones. Two, Aphrodite's tears became anemones.
On a personal note: I actually dated a guy named Adonis, I kid you not! We didn't date long. I suppose I wasn't his Aphrodite. ;)
