D is for Demeter

atoz2013
This is a challenge to post every day in April (except on Sundays) blogging thematically from A to Z. Go HERE for details. My A-Z theme this year is Greek Mythology inspired by the book The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan that I recently read.  Please be aware that what I write is my interpretation of my findings and may not necessarily be accurate.

Demeter is the goddess of corn, grain, and harvest and also presided over the sanctity of marriage, the sacred law, and the cycle of life and death.  She is the daughter of Cronus and Rhea (haha, so Cronus did upchuck his children).  She is also associated with seasons in light of what happens to her daughter, Persephone.  Hades had abducted Persephone.  Demeter searched and could not find her and so due to great sadness had caused the earth to stop living.  Zeus in fear of extinction of life on earth sent Hermes to the underworld to bring Persephone back.  Persephone however ate the pomegranate seeds and was bound to Hades for part of the year.  Hence, when Persephone spent time in the underworld, Demeter would be sad and the earth would be desolate again thus the season of winter.  Moreover, when Persephone returned home to the upper world, Demeter was happy and so the season of spring.

  1. This has always been one of my favorite myths, and I can't eat pomegranates without thinking about it. Loved the picture of Demeter.
